Microsoft unveils Windows 10
Microsoft has disclosed the first details of Windows 10 – its next operating system (OS), BBC reports.
The name is a surprise, bearing in mind it represents a jump from the last version – Windows 8.
The software will run on a wide range of devices, from phones and tablets to PCs and Xbox games consoles, with applications sold from a single store.
It also marks the return of the Start Menu, which had been removed from Windows 8.
In addition to offering a list of the user’s favourite applications, the menu also brings up resizable tiles – similar to those featured in Windows 8′s touch-centric interface on PCs and tablets.
These provide a quick view of notifications from relevant applications, such as details of new emails, Facebook messages and weather forecast updates.
The company said the facility was intended to make the software seem familiar to both users of Windows 8 and Windows 7.
The behaviour of the OS will depend on the type of device with which it is being used. Unlike its predecessor, users will not need to switch between Desktop Mode and the touch-focused alternative.
However, they can still spread a number of “live tiles” across the screens of two-in-one laptop-tablet hybrids to make them easier to use with both a mouse and finger presses.
‘Critical’ choice
Windows 8 had been criticised for being too different to the previous version, which deterred some organisations from introducing it.
It initially lacked a Start button altogether, and when one was introduced, it only switched to the touch-centric tiled interface or – if a long mouse press was used – provided access to the system’s control panel and other functions.
Businesses typically wait about a year after a new operating system’s release before offering it to workers, to give IT staff a chance to get to grips with the new technologies involved.
But it has been nearly two years since Windows 8 first went on sale and adoption is still low.
“It’s extremely important for Microsoft to get Windows 10 right,” said David Johnson, who watches Microsoft for the consultancy Forrester.
“Windows 8 is only being offered to employees by about one in five organisations right now. Windows 7 is still the de facto standard for enterprise in the desktop environment.
“For Microsoft to continue to be able to get the best and latest technology in the hands of the enterprise workforce all over the world, it has to have a vehicle to do that – and Windows 10 is its best shot.”
Across desktop PCs as a whole, only 13.4% currently run Windows 8 or Windows 8.1, according to research firm NetMarketshare.
By contrast, it says 51.2% are powered by Windows 7 and 23.9% by Windows XP, a version that is no longer supported by Microsoft.
Mr Johnson said the reintroduction of the Start Menu should help Windows 10 fare better.
“It is critically important,” he said.
“The Start Menu is perhaps the most important thing that will make the desktop experience familiar to business users, and will help reduce resistance to its installation.”
Microsoft has a delicate balancing act as it attempts to cater to a diverse audience using a cornucopia of devices, from traditional keyboard/mouse-based PCs to tablets.
It got that balance wrong with Windows 8 – which many users felt was skewed towards the touchscreen at the expense of the familiar PC desktop experience that they had come to know intimately.
I asked Terry Myerson, the chief of operating systems at Microsoft, why the leadership had chosen the moniker Windows 10, rather than the more logical Windows 9.
He told me somewhat obliquely that it resonated best for what the company would deliver across the breadth of devices. Unifying a brand across all devices is key to Microsoft’s vision.
But the Windows 10 name also symbolises that this will not be an incremental update, but something of a fresh start.
The user interface feels familiar yet modern. The “dual mode” – which aimed to satisfy tablet and PC users, but alienated both – has been replaced with a dynamically-adjusting interface and behaviour, determined by whether you are using a keyboard/mouse, or touch.
Ultimately Windows 10 success will depend on its execution. But at least under the new leadership, Microsoft is showing it is listening. It needs to if it is to stay relevant and stop the march of Android and Apple.
The company said it would provide details about the introduction of “universal apps” – individual programs that tailor their functionality to different types of devices – at its Build conference in April, and would aim to release the completed OS before the end of 2015.
There was no mention of offering the firm’s voice-controlled digital assistant Cortana to PCs, or when Windows 10 would supersede the Windows Phone OS.
The firm’s smartphone code is designed for ARM-based processors, unlike the main Windows 8 and Xbox operating systems that are built for x86 chips – including those made by Intel and AMD.
While Microsoft confirmed that Windows 10 would be released for both types of chip architecture, it did not disclose whether there would be a staggered release.
One analyst suggested that by using a single OS to power a wide range of devices, it might increase the amount of software available to all of them.
“The idea is, longer-term, to encourage developers to release more apps for Windows,” said Annette Jump from the tech research firm Gartner.
“That’s Microsoft’s biggest challenge at the moment when it comes to tablets and phones – there are not as many apps as there are for iOS and Android.”
Even so, another expert highlighted that the announcement in San Francisco had been deliberately tailored to appeal to business users.
“The event was clearly geared toward Microsoft’s bread and butter enterprise customer, and we believe starting an early dialogue with these customers as well as learning from previous mistakes made in Redmond – eg Windows 8 – will be key to garnering major adoption of this all-important product cycle in the field,” said Daniel Ives from research firm BlueMatrix.
“Overall, we believe today’s event was another step in the right direction in the [Satya] Nadella era, and that Microsoft remains well positioned… while it undergoes a major restructuring effort to make it a ‘leaner and meaner’ technology giant over the coming years.”
32 killed in India festival stampede
At least 32 people have been killed and 15 others injured in a stampede during an important Hindu festival in India, Aljazeera reports. Indian officials said the accident occurred on Friday near a public park in the city of Patna in the eastern Bihar state and that the fatalities were mostly women and children. Dussehra – a festival during which effigies of the demon king Ravana are burnt to mark the victory of good over evil – draws huge crowds at the Gandhi Maidan in Patna, the administrative capital of Bihar. “We have information that 32 people including women and children died due to a stampede,” Gupteshwar Pandey, additional director-general of police for Bihar state, told AFP news agency. “Dozens of people were seriously injured.” In addition to the dead, at least 15 people were taken to hospital. Police were examining closed-circuit television pictures to determine the cause. Reports said rumours of a live electricy cable falling on people prompted the stampede, with people rushing towards the exit as they were leaving at the end of the Dussehra celebrations. Officials were quoted by NDTV as saying that some people fainted during the stampede and were admitted to the Patna Medical College Hospital, which is just two kilometres from the site of the incident. Television channels quoted a witness as saying there were not enough lights once the ceremony was over. Government under fire Politicians cutting across party lines criticised the Bihar government for not taking enough precautions to prevent such incidents during festive time. Ram Vilas Paswan, federal minister of consumer affairs, food and public distribution, who belongs to the state of Bihar, said the crowd management was poor and officials failed to stop the disaster even though a gathering of such proportion assembles every year. “The important thing to note is that how did such a big incident happen and what was the government doing about it. This is not the first time that people were gathered at the venue. Every year people gather to celebrate the Hindu festival of Dussehra. There was lack of security and only one gate was open while there were four gates available. The lives of the people could have been saved if all the gates were open,” Paswan said. Ravi Shankar Prasad, the federal minister for information technology and communication, who also belongs to Bihar, criticised the state government for repeatedly being careless towards preventing such incidents. “In October last year there was an incident during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech when 80 people died. During the Hindu festival of Chhath Puja, similar incidents happened. Dussehra festival comes every year: how did this [tragedy] happen? If someone had sent a rumour, then why wasn’t he stopped? Why where there no arrangements for exit? These are all serious questions on the government,” Prasad said. Manoj Jha, spokesperson of Rashtriya Janata Dal, a regional party, said the Bihar government did not ensure enough safety measures for the devotees attending the annual event. “When you invite people – and everybody who came to Gandhi Maidan were invited ones – there should have been enough measures to make sure that there were proper arrangements for safety and security,” Jha said.

Smith hits maiden ton, Australia thrash Pakistan in first ODI
Steve Smith cracked his maiden 50-over century as Australia routed Pakistan in 36.3 overs to secure a comprehensive 93-run victory in the first One Day International on Tuesday.
Batting at number three, the nimble-footed Smith hit a sparkling 101 to help Australia to a competitive, if not intimidating, 255-8 in 50 overs after skipper George Bailey had won the toss and decided to bat first in Sharjah’s oppressive heat.
Pakistan responded well until off-spinner Nathan Lyon claimed two wickets in two deliveries, including that of rival skipper Misbah-Ul-Haq, in the 13th over to turn the match on its head as Australia took 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Opener Sarfraz Ahmed (34) and Umar Akmal (46) provided some resistance with the bat before Pakistan folded for 162 in the 37th over.
Lyon and fellow off-spinner Glenn Maxwell claimed two wickets apiece while Mitchell Johnson (3-24) proved a quality pace bowler can succeed even on a docile, spin-friendly surface.
Earlier Smith’s brilliant century notwithstanding, Australia did not get the late burst that could have taken them past the 275-mark. Shahid Afridi (3-46) was the pick of the Pakistani bowlers who conceded 37 runs in the first 10 overs and 64 in the final 10 to restrict Australia to a modest total at the Sharjah Cricket Ground.
Smith walked in to partner David Warner for a steady 85-run partnership before Afridi separated them in his second over.

Telecom minister Abdul Latif Siddique, whose fate in the cabinet has been in doubt over the past few days, is also set to lose his Presidium membership in the Awami League after Eid-ul-Azha.
A few leaders of the ruling party told the Dhaka Tribune last night that chief and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina made the discloser when they went to meet her at Ganabhaban.
She told them about her plan to hold a meeting of the party’s Working Committee after Eid to remove Latif from party post.
The leaders said the premier had expressed her anger over Latif Siddique’s recent comments.
Party sources said General Secretary Syed Ahsraful Islam, Jahanir Kabir Nanok, Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, Dr Hasan Mahmud others among the leaders who met Hasina after her return to Dhaka.
Latif Siddique’s removal from the cabinet, however, will remain pending until the president gives his nod to the decision after returning from hajj, according to a senior leader of the party.
Earlier in the day, Sheikh Hasina was quoted by the party’s Central Organising Secretary Mesbah Uddin Ahmed Siraj as saying: “He [Latif] will be removed from the cabinet and all party posts as it is unacceptable when anyone hurts the religious sentiment of the people.
“A sane person cannot make such comments hurting people’s religious sentiments. Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam. I have also performed hajj and umrah several times. So, if anyone from my cabinet and party makes such statements, it will not be tolerated.”
Following her return to the country after a 10-day visit to the US and the UK, Hasina made the remarks to her party members at the VIP lounge of Osmani International Airport in Sylhet.

Health Minister Mohammed Nasim has come down heavily on high officials of the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) for providing lease of cattle markets around three hospitals in the Sher-E-Bangla Nagar in the capital.
“The administrator of the DNCC had done criminal offense providing the approval of setting up cattle markets near hospitals,” he said.
He urged the Ministry of Local Government and Cooperatives to take action against the administrator of the Dhaka North City Corporation.
He also termed the administrator as a criminal and nonsense person. A huge number of patients of three public hospitals located in the Sher-E-Bangla Nagar area have to suffer a lot because of the cattle markets before Eid, he said.

Expressing sorry to patients for their sufferings, he said: “I requested and even gave official letters to the concern officials not to give permission for setting up cattle markets near hospitals.
“I do not know in which interest he (administrator) gave permission of cattle markets.”
Asked about which action the ruling party Awami League will take against a Juba League leader, who had taken lease of a cattle market at Sher-E-Bangla Nagar, he said party would take decision in this regard.

There are no roads and there is no water," said Gandhi, who is currently on a two-day visit to his constituency Amethi in Uttar Pradesh. The Bharatiya Janata Party made tall promises in the run-up to the general elections but there is no action on the ground after it came to power, he claimed."The government came on a set of promises. $ 81 billion worth man wears a $10 watch
The richest man in America, who leads one of the world’s biggest and most influential philanthropies, keeps time with a 10-buck wristwatch. And this summer, for his wife’s 50th birthday, Bill Gates and family headed to Austria for a “Sound of Music” vacation. Where he sang and, he admitted, wore Lederhosen.
Such true confessions came Monday morning at ‘POLITICO’s Lessons from Leaders’ inaugural event, which hosted Gates as the featured guest. Chief White House correspondent Mike Allen solicited the timepiece tidbit as Gates talked about the new technologies that allow people to monitor their own health. But the other Intel was revealed at the end of nearly an hour of conversation.
Gates, with a net worth that Forbes on Monday estimated at $81 billion, gamely went along with the fun-facts questions.
A couple other details: He plays a lot of tennis and recommends “a full body swing” for the best game. He reads The Economist cover to cover weekly and is finishing a new book by Henry Kissinger titled “World Order.”
But the most enjoyable read he’s had lately is “The Rosie Project,” which he picked up because wife Melinda was laughing out loud over it. According to the book’s online synopsis, it’s about “a brilliant yet socially inept professor of genetics, who’s decided it’s time he found a wife” and approaches this goal with “a sixteen-page, scientifically valid survey to filter out the drinkers, the smokers, the late-arrivers.”
